memorize scripture

Step three: repeat

REPEAT the Scripture over and again and again (and again and again and again :) as you need until you are able to remember it. You might remember bits and pieces of the verses at first, then more and more, until you can repeat them in their entirety from memory.

This part of memorizing can be discouraging, but take heart. Generally, people cannot say one or more verses once or just a few times and remember the whole of the verses the rest of their lives. Therefore, be diligent and persevere. Your efforts will reap a good reward.

When you repeat the Scripture, say the verses with the reference before and after them. The reference is the “address” of the verses in the Bible. It consists of the name of the Book in the Bible, the chapter in the Book where the verses are found, and the small number next to the verses within the chapter. For example, the reference for verses 9 and 10 in the tenth chapter of the Book of Romans is stated as “Romans, chapter 10, verses 9-10,” and looks like this: Romans 10:9-10.
